Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo has been in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons lately – his free-throw shooting. Ahead of their game against the Orlando Magic, Bucks TV analyst Steve Novak couldn't resist taking a playful jab at the two-time MVP.
While Antetokounmpo was warming up with his sons, Novak's camera zoomed in on his youngest, Maverick Shai, dribbling the ball. "Look at this guy," Novak quipped, "I guarantee you, he can make some free throws."
The joke lands because Antetokounmpo's free-throw percentage this season is a dismal 66.2%, the third worst of his career. His struggles extend beyond this season, with a career-worst 63.3% in 2019-20 and a still-unimpressive 64.5% last year.
Of course, Novak, with his career average of 87.7% from the line, has some authority to poke fun at Antetokounmpo's shooting woes. Despite not reaching the same heights as Giannis, Novak was a sharpshooter in his own right.
Adding another layer to the story is Antetokounmpo's impressive performance despite the free-throw struggles. He's played through a right midfoot sprain, missing just one game all season, and has been dominant in December, averaging 32.4 points, 11.8 rebounds, and 7.0 assists.
Meanwhile, the Bucks are riding a five-game winning streak and looking strong overall with a 20-7 record.
